MIMOSA TREES

Our Connecticut tree nursery features the pink flowering

mimosa or silk tree (Albizia julibrissin).

Trees with traditional green foliage and pink flowers are available. From season to season, there is a limited quantity of trees with dark or chocolate colored foliage.  A dwarf variety of the pink flowering mimosa tree is sometimes available.

The stunning and popular ornamental mimosa trees are great, not only in the garden (Zones 6-9), but they can also be placed in a large planter for a patio or deck display.

Ornamental tree fans may enjoy the Blue Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia) which produces stunning,long-lasting blue flowers in the Summer:

Blue Jacaranda which is also known as Black Poui in Hawaii grows well in the garden in warmer climates (Zones 6 -10) or as a planter specimen in colder climates.   It is grown and cherished in various parts of the world.

SILK TREE GARDENS

DEVELOPMENTAL DIRECTIONS 2008-2009

In 2008 a variety of new trees and shrubs were added to the tree nursery.  Continuing emphasis is placed on the development of stocks of native evergreen trees including pine, cedar, spruce, fir, hemlock, and cypress, as well as, evergreen shrubs such as mugo pine, and yew.

Native deciduous trees which are common favorites:  sugar maple, silver maple, black maple, striped maple, red maple, represent an important part of our tree inventory.  Amur maple has been added to the tree nursery and will be available for landscaping purposes in 2010.

'A warmer climate could change the character of Connecticut’s forests. Maple dominated hardwood forests could give way to forests dominated by oaks and conifers, species more tolerant of higher temperatures. This change would diminish the brilliant autumn foliage as the contribution of maples decline' (Excerpt from Climate Change in Connecticut, http://nextgenerationearth.com

Urban neighborhoods, in this area of Connecticut, which once had streets lined with maples are now receding into concrete landscapes.   Consider softenening the urban street landscape with maples or other interesting trees.  Street trees help reduce noise and the effects of pollution.

SILK TREE GARDENS

TREES WITH NOTABLE AMERICAN HISTORY

Yellow Poplar trees (Liriodendron tulipifera) bloom in

Connecticut in May and June.  The tulip tree was grown

and cultivated by General George Washington.

Today, this tree with dramatic and colorful flowers,

is often overlooked as a landscaping tree with

stunning potential.  Silk Tree Gardens

grows both Yellow and Black Poplar trees.

AMERICAN YELLOWWOOD TREE

The Yellowwood tree is spectacular when it blooms every

5-7 years.  It is rare, difficult to find in the United States.

This rare tree was originally identified by the famous French

botanist Andre Michaux (http://www.michaux.org/michaux.htm)

in the 18th Century on his botanical exploration of the central

and Southeastern United States.  Some of the original tree seeds

were planted in Tuileries, France in the 18th and 19th Centuries.

Original Yellowwood trees are still in that area of France.

Andre Michaux is also responsible for the introduction of

the Mimosa or Silk Tree to the United States in the 18th Century

The Yellowwood is being cultivated at Silk Tree Gardens

tree nursery.  Informative Links which provide information

about the Yellowwood are:
